Today’s Present – How Will You Use It?

“Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, and today is gift: that’s why they call it the present.”

Eleanor Roosevelt

Eleanor Roosevelt’s quote just came across my desk again today.  I have seen it many times before and each time it reappears it is a reminder for me.  It reminds me to

Enjoy Today to the Fullest.

You see – I have spent far too much of my life reflecting on how I screwed up in the past and worrying about what may happen tomorrow.

Regardless of how much time I spent thinking about how I screwed up yesterday, the day before or last week, I could not go back and change it.  I could not magically correct the wrongs I did.  All that I could do is learn from my mistakes and work on not making the mistake again.  I will never be perfect.

I Will Celebrate the Progress I Make Today

Sometime ago I took a Dale Carnegie course.  In that course I learned that regardless of how much I worried about the future over 90% of what I  worried about would not occur.  That hit home.  I stopped worrying as much afterwards.  I still slip and spend time worrying about what might happen in the future.  However, it is far less than prior to my Dale Carnegie course.  I have to say that I have found that

Most of What I Worry About Never Happens.

So that brings us to today and the present Eleanor Roosevelt talked about.  Each day has 24 hours.  If you break that down into minutes, there are 1,440. Are we enjoying those 1,440 minutes that we have?

I have to admit that many times I get so caught up in the garbage that is happening around me or that I create for myself, the time just flies by.  I don’t enjoy it at all.  At other times I just waste the now by checking emails or looking at Facebook or doing other valueless things.

Are You Like Me?

Do you find yourself letting your day slip by without enjoying it?  Do you ever find yourself thinking that you never want to experience what you just experienced again?  At the end of a week do you say to yourself that you’re glad that week is over?

Would you resolve with me that we will no longer allow this to continue?  Let’s look at today as the gift Eleanor Roosevelt talked about.  From right now until we go to sleep tonight let’s look at what wonders we will experience today.  Let’s be like that 4 year old that we see regularly.  You know – the one who is so excited and wrapped up in what they’re doing, they lose all concept of time.

When we get up tomorrow morning

Let’s Resolve to Appreciate the Day to the Fullest.

Let’s make a conscious effort to do the same thing when we get up each morning until it becomes a habit for us.  At that point we no longer will have to consciously do it.  It will happen naturally.

There is one thing you need to be aware of.  Someone is going to come along and just dump on you.  It is bound to happen.  When it does, minimize its effect on you.  Just remember they cannot control you.  Only you have that power.  As soon afterwards as you can, get back to enjoying the day to its fullest.

What’s The Benefit for You?

You will have far more happiness and joy in your life than ever before.  You will also feel much better about yourself than you ever did.  You will enjoy your life much, much more.

Have a great day,

Bob Paroski
