Here we are – several days before Thanksgiving.
What a great time to be grateful!
Thanksgiving is that unique time of year when we have the opportunity to reflect back on what has happened during the year and be grateful for what we have experienced.
You may say that you have nothing to be grateful for. You lost your job this year. You have looked hard and can’t find a new one.
Maybe you are working; however, your expenses are mounting and you are in a severe financial crisis. You have no idea where you are going to get the money you need to recover from this crisis.
Your job and finances may be in order. However, your most important relationship just ended and you don’t know how you will recover.
Any of these are disastrous even for the most positive person. At Thanksgiving it is worse. People feel they have nothing to be grateful for.
Do you know what?
Actually You Do
There probably were many positive things that happened in your life this year. Stop and think about it for a moment
Do you remember that special thanks from a friend, coworker or maybe even a stranger that you helped? What about that unique gift you received from a relative or friend? Do you remember that spectacular sunrise or sunset that you had the opportunity to see?
All Too Frequently
We let negative experiences take over our minds and emotions and turn us into negative people. None of us want to be that way. It just happens.
Several years ago I listened to a cassette program by a very successful coach. His name is Dan Sullivan. In that program he recommended that after we get up every morning and before we do anything else, we should take some time and write down five things that we are grateful for. Anyone who does that consistently sets themselves up to have a positive day.
I invite you to do that. Start it right now, tomorrow morning and see what impact it has on you. Remember – It won’t start to work immediately. It may take awhile but it will work.
I also suggest that on a regular basis you talk to a friend, someone who has the habit of making you feel good. Talk to this friend on a weekly basis. By doing this you will find that you will be in a great mood for the rest of that day and also for several days afterwards.
You can also do something which puts you in a good mood. Some people have positive music that they listen to. Others watch funny movies. Others just watch small children having fun. You know what puts you in a good mood. Just do it.
Please Do A Favor for Me
When you get up this Thursday morning, take ten minutes and write down five things you are grateful for. Mid morning do something which puts you in a good mood.
When you sit down for your Thanksgiving dinner, turn to the person to your left and right and tell them what you appreciate about them. If you are eating dinner by yourself at a restaurant on Thanksgiving, let your server know how grateful you are to have them serve you. If you happen to spend Thanksgiving at home by yourself this year, pull out a sheet of paper and write a note to a relative or friend letting them know how grateful you are that they are who they are.
Happy Thanksgiving,
Bob Paroski
